Intense literacy instruction helps students strengthen already learned skills, develop new skills, and avoid the "summer slide." Each weekday of camp, campers receive the following literacy instruction:
1:1 Individualized Literacy Instruction
Tutors trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach with a minimum of one year of experience provide daily 1:1 tutoring sessions. Lessons are prepared to meet the specific needs of each camper and include the five critical elements of researched based-literacy instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This approach to reading has been proven to strengthen the literacy abilities of individuals who struggle with reading. 1:1 Oral Reading with an Adult Partner
Oral reading allows campers to read a selected text for their independent reading level with the assistant of an adult partner when needed. Adult partners facilitate comprehension, fluency, and interest in reading. Oral reading allows campers to practice the skills they have been taught in their one-to-one tutoring sessions.
Small-Group Written Expression and Vocabulary Development
Written expression focuses primarily on sentence composition, basic grammar, and developing more vibrant vocabularies. The sentence is the foundation of advanced writing. Campers learn to "dress up" their sentences with adjectives, adverbs, and the five senses. Improving campers' vocabulary improves not only their writing but also their reading comprehension.
